In the fast-paced, stress-inducing society we live in, where it seems there’s not a moment where we’re not checking our, it can be difficult to find time to step back and reflect. Even on vacation, often it seems that it’s more about getting to all of the sights and snapping photos than really living in the moment. Enter: Kimpton Surfcomber. They’ve launched an initiative rooted in exploring what makes us human.
Set in South Beach, Miami, Kimpton Surfcomber Hotel has created a “Stay Human Room” with a set of activities designed to wake up your creative side, allow time to self-reflect, help connect with other people, spark discovery, and provide a space to simply enjoy being a human. Best of all, it’s immersed in a gorgeous oceanfront setting, surrounded by palm trees, pools, and sandy beaches.
A number of stations offer creative stimulus within the room, including one for wall art, equipped with art supplies to create a small painting. Upon completion of the Stay Human project, each individual art piece will be placed together in a 4’x4′ installation to but hung inside the room, displaying the collective vision of all that have stayed and participated.
The room also comes with an instant Polaroid camera for guests to snap images of themselves throughout the day that represent their moods. Sharpie markers will be available as well to write on the white space around the photo and describe their emotions. The idea is to go beyond a selfie and try to depict what you’re actually feeling. Guest images will be added to the room’s photo album to form a collective mood diary.
An interactive herb garden on the balcony stands as an opportunity for guests to connect with their nurturing side. This is a way to connect guests as each spend time taking care of the plants, nothing how they’ve cared for them in a co-op setup. The garden serves as an exercise to relax and breathe while also offering a greater sense of purpose—herbs from this garden will be used in the hotel’s kitchen to prepare meals for the guest.
Naturally, there’s also an “Active + Relax Station” which includes meditation, yoga classes, hula hooping, and other physical activities like aqua cycling. There’s also a Spotify community playlist available in the room, curated by Lauren Bucherie, Kimpton’s Director of Music.
Staying grounded can seem impossible in the day-to-day; though is imperative for healthy functioning. Initiatives like Stay Human are designed to make it just a little bit easier and provide subtle reminders of how we can take moments for ourselves in our own routines. Something as simple as writing down an emotion is an easy and efficient exercise to bring us back to the foundational elements of being a human—feeling.
