Introducing a jigsaw puzzle with no beginning or end. The new Infinite Galaxy Puzzle 2 takes players on a journey through the milky way with no starting point, no edges, and infinite possibilities. Only Nervous System, a design company known for using 3D printing, scientific research, and other computer generative systems to produce otherworldly art, jewelry, and housewares, can pull off a celestial puzzle this unique.

The Makers Behind the Cosmic Puzzle

Founded in 2007 by designers and makers Jessica Rosenkrantz and Jesse Louis-Rosenberg, the Nervous System team are trailblazers in the application of new technologies in generative design. They also allow customers to co-create products in an effort to make the design more accessible. This interactivity and openness results in “no definitive, final product – instead the many designs created allow for mass customization,” according to the team.

The Complex Design

According to Nervous System, “Topologically, the Infinite Galaxy Puzzle 2 maps to a real projective plane, an impossible 3D shape where the inside and outside are mathematically indistinguishable.” What’s this mean in layman’s terms? Pieces from the one side attach to the other but only after flipping over.

The puzzle has no up or down side allowing players to start anywhere on any side, making it super challenging. The image is continuous from one side of the surface to the other, preventing the user from seeing the entire photo at once. But what are we looking at ?

The Image

The heavenly image is a photograph taken by the NASA Hubble Telescope of a young star cluster, about two million years young, called the Westerlund 2 located in the boundless Milky Way. This significant capture was chosen to celebrate the 25thanniversary of the Hubble Telescope and contains some of the hottest, most luminous stars ever discovered.

This puzzle set is a continuation of their first Infinite Galaxy Puzzle project. What’s the difference from the original design? The first galaxy puzzle only flips in one direction, “This may sound like a simple change, but it dramatically transforms how the puzzle plays out. For instance, the corners form a kind of singularity, and connect to themselves with a 180-degree rotation and no flip,” according to the Nervous System team.

The 236-piece Infinite Galaxy Puzzle 2 is created from birch plywood using custom software and precise laser-cutting techniques. Among the galactic shapes, the makers also added three whimsical pieces of an astronaut, the international space station, and a space shuttle.
