Knot artist Windy Chien takes us on a tour of her studio in San Francisco, as well as her process. She discusses how she stays focused, the foundation of her work, tips on how to make a living as an artist, and why she’ll never get tired of what she does.

Obsessed with the notion of the line, it’s her building block. It also stands as a metaphor for travel. She held two fulfilling previous lives before she became an artist in her late 40s, and through her pieces, she visually manifests the story of where she’s been. The line itself takes a journey through each piece.

Accordingly, her space is conducive to focusing on the line. She downplays elements like color, keeping it a neutral palette to create. She recently completed her Year of Knots, publishing an entire book with projects, tutorials, and personal stories. In her studio, she has an entire wall with each of these that serve as her palette to refer to while she’s pulling rope from giant spools on the shelves or seated on her shag rug knotting.
