There’s no better time to purge, clean, and spruce up than spring. With many of us shifting into working from home, it’s important to have a dedicated space to focus—to be able to turn on and off, not just for productivity but balance in the day-to-day. Acclaimed interior designer and author of Be Bold: Bespoke Modern Interiors, Jay Jeffers shares his tips for creating the ultimate home office that is both functional and inspiring.

Hone in on Home

Jay’s main tip is to make the home office NOT feel like an office. Give the room more of a library or study feel with shelving filled with books, family photos, or other objects that make you happy–happiness leads to more productivity!

Perfect Desk Placement

If possible, Jay suggests investing in a nice sculptural desk.  Alternately, place your existing table or desk in the center of a room, or facing a window or your favorite interior view of your home, whether it’s a beautiful fireplace or perfect shelfie, for instance.

Contain the Clutter

Devote a small portion of the closet for a printer or other equipment, so it’s out of sight. Better yet, go paperless as much as possible to maintain organization. To contain other desk items, use decorative baskets to keep them hidden and give the room a more residential feel.

Be Bold

Lastly, give the home office some personality. Paint or wallpaper the walls, use a comfy wingback chair as a desk chair, or hang some unique art. Adding a lovely chandelier or desk lamp not only adds flair, but ensures better lighting for video calls. If you don’t have a separate room, use a desk as a nightstand on one side. Add a nice lamp or flowers and be sure to keep it tidy!
